Day 7 - A Great Smoke-Free Weekend!

Well, well, well - not that I wasn't confident in my ability to kick the nasty habit...but, I believe this habit is definitely gone - FOR GOOD! I was out and about with the wife and kids all day yesterday - went to a summer festival, farmer's market, garage sales, looking at houses - all the while - never had a craving to light up a smoke. In fact, I was near someone at some point that was smoking and tought that the smell was REPULSIVE!

Today, I would imagine, would be just more of the same. I do have a lot I need to accomplish on the computer today for some clients.

I guess that's about it for now! Talk to you soon!

Day 6 - The Weekend is Finally Here!

It's Saturday...FINALLY! After a long week at work, I can enjoy some quality family time...without cigarettes! Today we're heading out to Wagonerfest - a local festival about 20-25 minutes away from the house. This will get us out of the house and enjoying this weather!

After that...probably just business as usual - come home and play with the boys!

The non-smoking thing really is getting easier every minute. It is definitely more of a mental game than a pharmacalogical game. It's kind of like a competition to me now. I've hit 100 hours of being smoke-free. My attitude was..."Okay, bring on the 200 hour mark!"

I really am feeling better, I'm sleeping better, I'm more awake in the mornings now - hell, I was up and at 'em by 7:00 this morning on the weekend - and HAPPY about it!

Hope all of you have a great weekend...here's to a great one for my family!

Talk soon!

Day 5 - 100 Hours Has Come and Gone!

I'm so excited that I can honestly say I've been smoke free for more than 100 straight hours. It's actually been much easier, all things considered, than I originally thought it would be. The day here at the office is FINALLY wrapping up - seems like it's gone on for an eternity! I decided to take the last couple of minutes to share with you my celebration of hitting 100 hours and, of course, my latest reading. The circulation meter is starting to move some more...hopefully with another couple of days, I'll be more in the "moderate" section of the chart.

Nevertheless...here's to a great weekend!

Day 5 - Another Night with the In-Laws

So apparently my timing was a little off in the week to quit smoking. Last night when I got home, my mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law, niece and nephew were all there and let's just say the volume was a "little loud". Actually...it was a zoo. With our two boys that are exploring everything and my niece and nephew who have collectively more energy than a case of Red Bulls - it was crazy! Although it was crazy...I still managed to not smoke! That was probably the toughest out of everything so far. In the past, I've always just gone outside when "I've had enough" - or just need to get away. This time - I've found my new refuge. We've got a table right by a window in our Master Bedroom. I went back there, shut the door, sat on the table, got out the trusty iPhone and jammed to a few songs from iTunes as I stared into the backyard. It was nice. It was quiet. It was much needed.

Once the family left, and we got the boys down to bed...it was so nice to have a quiet evening - our house back to "just us" - and we sat on the couch together, had a snack and watched some tv. Later in the night I talked to my best bud, Henry. I must say, if it wasn't for my wife and him - and the support that both of them have given me - I probably would have started back up by now. It's great to know that I have an awesome support group.

Lastly...I must say that I can honestly tell you just how much my wife HATED the fact that I smoked. I don't think I've ever been kissed more and hugged more by her. She's never sat closer to me or laid closer to me than she has this week. She's so much happier. So fellas...if you're a smoker - and your wife isn't - TRUST ME...you should quit. There's plenty of LOVE that she wants to share. She'd just rather not do it with an ashtray! :)

Well - time to get to work here. TGIF! I've been ready for this day all week long! Talk to you soon!

Day 4 - Last Night = No Fun.

So last night was terribly hard for me. My sister-in-law and nephew were in town staying the night last night so we could have a small birthday party for him today at our house. Let's just say that my timing to quit smoking wasn't the greatest when it comes to having company over. The volume was so loud in the house and everything was just going crazy - I had to get out.

I left the house to go pick up dinner for everyone - I was planning on going with someone. I decided that I needed time to myself. Long story short...I still didn't smoke. I so wanted to make that turn into the gas station and buy a pack of smokes...but I've made it this far and I'm not going to let a few extra people in my house stop me from quitting this nasty habit.

Alas - It's been 70 hours, 27 minutes since I last had a drag off a cigarette. This is getting harder I think - my throat is starting to flare up, my eyes are burning, my focus is gone...but I will NOT give up.

I'm doing this for myself, my beautiful wife AND my precious boys at home! I will persevere.

Talk to you soon!

Day 3 - Thanks for Lunch!

I'm glad my wife packed me a good lunch today! I just scarfed it all down - two bratwursts and a bag of cracker jacks! Nothing like some great comfort food when you're kicking the habit...not to mention it's kind of a gloomy, cool day here in Tulsa.

Well - today's going good. This morning I was pretty fidgety and all over the place, but I think I've found my zone for now and we're doing good. Lunch helped out tremendously - now I'm going to get to work here...lot's to do at the office today!

Day 3 - Crazy Dreams Last Night!

Wow...so it's day 3 right now and last night (after eating dinner...then a few hours later a soft pretzel with cheese, nachos and a drumstick) I went to bed earlier than normal again. I woke up on two different occassions - and if I didn't know any better I was hallucinating or something like the sort. It was crazy - I was all over the bed, sweating profusely, and went right back to sleep after waking myself up.

The alarm goes off at 6:30 a.m. - normally it's still going off at 7:00 a.m. and I don't get out of bed until the wife kicks me in the junk. Nevertheless, this morning - 6:30 a.m. came, alarm went off, I popped right out of bed and into the shower. I felt great this morning! I didn't hack anything up in the shower or while brushing my teeth! I can really tell a difference today that I'm no longer smoking.

So after I got all ready for work, I went in to kiss my wife and tell her to have a good day (the normal routine) - I don't go in and tell the kids goodbye because they just stand in their cribs and scream if I go in there and don't get them out. I went into the home office/guest bedroom, which is where I keep all of my "stuff" for work - padfolio, keys, flash drive, etc. - and my wife had put together a "survival kit" for me with mints, gum, cracker jacks, granola bars, stop smoking books/guides...and even packed a lunch for me today! Damn she's good! :) I'm so thankful to have her in my life. Not only is she a great wife and an awesome mother...she's such a great friend and "fan" of mine. She's always rooting for me regardless of what the situation is. Thank you, honey! :)

Well - I guess I'll get cracking on this thing called "work"!

I'm sure I'll be talking to you soon! Don't forget to check out my newest reading below!

Day 2 - The Work Day is Ending

Well...I've finished the work day without a single cigarette. It really wasn't all that bad. I had to grab a piece of gum from Kelly and also Jon today - that helped A LOT! The cravings were definitely there - but I just kept working through them.

Day 2 - Wow...this is hard!

I rarely ever eat lunch during the week while I'm at work. Typically, I'll forego the whole "food thing" until I get home from work and then decide I need to eat about 4 servings of whatever my wife is making us for dinner. Yeah...that's probably not very healthy.

Well...today I decided to head out to lunch. I needed to get something in my system - I was really lagging and just not focusing well on work - which there's quite a bit of that to do. I grabbed my keys off my desk and headed toward the elevator. I got in the elevator to head down to the car. The whole time I was in the elevator, I was thinking - "Don't go to QuikTrip. Don't go to QuikTrip. Don't go t..." - I didn't necessarily trust myself about driving over to lunch and going right by a gas station without going in.

I headed in my car to Quizno's and tore through a Turkey Pesto Torpedo, Harvest Cheddar SunChips and some ridiculously amazing raspberry lemonade! It was delicious. I managed to come back to the station...and I did NOT stop at a gas station or by any cigarettes! YAYYY!

The only hard part of the whole trip was right when I got back and was walking into the building - there was a guy smoking right by the door. I so wanted to stop and ask to bum one...but I didn't - I kept on moving!

I'm back in the office now...and it's really effecting me. I'm getting numbing sensations all over - my fingers are like on crack; they won't slow down for anything - my mouth feels weird...UGH - this sucks!

Sorry to banter on and on about this...but this is helping me get through these cravings.

Have a great day!

Daily Tidbit from My Last Cigarette
Cancer of the bladder is incurable. Cigarettes contain over 60 cancerous substances and over 4,000 chemicals. Smoking increases the risk of cance anywhere in the body, not just the obvious places such as the throat and lungs.

Day 2 - Maybe It's Not So Easy!

Wow! Last night was okay...I wanted to eat everything in sight and I went to bed by 10:15 p.m. - that's about 2 hours earlier than normal. I woke up this morning and felt better - I couldn't believe it! I could feel that I was breathing better already!

I drove to work and started the daily grind. This was the hardest - as my normal routine was to (in robotic fashion) get out of car, reach in pocket, get out cigarette, light cigarette, smoke cigarette, dread going up to work, extinguish cigarette, go to work.

But...I managed to get past all of that today...and then about 9:30 a.m. hit - my mouth started "numbing" and I felt like I was slurring my speech. Kelly (my boss) gave me a piece of gum (not nicotine gum) and that has seemed to help quite a bit! All in all - I think if I were to have brought some food with me today to the office for lunch and a snack or two, I'd be fine.

Lastly, I downloaded an iPhone app last night to assist in my goal of quitting smoking. It is the BEST quitting smoking iPhone app that I've seen and it's only $0.99. It's called "My Last Cigarette". It gives me readings of how everything "looks" in my body, how much money I've saved, how much "time" I've added back on to my life since quitting smoking and a whole heck of a lot more! Below each post from now on, I will tell you what the readings are.

'Til Next Time!

Day 1 - This is easy!

So I've set out to do what I've done many, many, MANY times before...quit smoking. Except this time, had to be different. I've got twin 1(+) year old boys at home, and I want to make sure that I'm around for them and all of their accomplishments in life. I'm done with the expense of buying cigarettes. I'm done with the staining of the teeth. I'm done with the smell. I'm done with my wife being wholly disgusted with me. I'm going to quit. And damnit...I'm going to do it right this time!

I've tried just about everything in past that's available. From nicotine replacement to prescription to resource guides and self-help manuals - been there, done that. I'm doing it cold turkey right now and I must say...it's much easier than I thought.

Instead of reading through diatribes of medical facts and figures online - i've decided to blog about my experiences. Everytime I want to smoke - I'll hop on here and talk about what I'm thinking...what I'm wanting...or just to BS my way through a five minute time span until the craving is gone.

Bear with me - we might have some interesting posts - but I hope you keep coming back. I also hope that if you are quitting smoking as well - let me hear your thoughts, too.

Wish me luck!

The New Non-Smoker
